Project Description
Weaving straw is a 500 year old tradition in Vietnam, and in a remote village named Dong Binh, on an island off Da Nang, this age old craft lives on. Planting starts in March; and harvesting occurs in June and July. In preparation for weaving, the straws are split with a cleaving knife, and sun dried until golden brown.
The sun dried straw is then tied in small bundles, and either dyed various colors or left natural. The dyed straw is sun dried again, and afterwards is ready to be woven into hats, shoes, and handbags for the fashion industry; and placemats, baskets, and area rugs for the home industry.
